Andy Burnham has entered Downing Street as the nation’s new Prime Minister
Burnham has announced a VAT cut to help give people ‘breathing space’ amid the cost-of-living crisis ahead of chairing his first Cabinet meeting.
The new Prime Minister and his new Chancellor John Healey announced on Tuesday that VAT will be removed from domestic electricity bills from October 1.
His first major policy announcement came after he conducted a Cabinet re-shuffle.
Angela Rayner has returned to Government as Andy Burnham’s Housing Secretary in a bombshell appointment on Monday.
Ms Rayner resigned from the role under Keir Starmer last September after an ethics investigation found she had breached the ministerial code.
The new Prime Minister also sacked Rachel Reeves and gave former Defence Secretary John Healey the top Treasury role.
Mr Healey, who dramatically quit Sir Keir Starmer’s government last month over a lack of funding for the armed forces, said it is the “greatest privilege” to take on the new position.
In a statement posted on X, he added: “Together, we will build a new economy, build new hope and advance the working people of this country. Time to get on with the job.”
Mr Burnham sacked many of his predecessor’s closest allies as part of a major Cabinet clean-out hours after becoming Prime Minister.
