The brutal reason Kemi Badenoch had no choice but to sack Mel Stride_D

Don’t be fooled, the Tories are making sound progress.

In fact, the party, which faced a wipeout at the 2024 General Election, is making huge strides towards reestablishing itself as a credible future government.

Those strides will continue to be taken without Sir Mel Stride after he was axed as Shadow Chancellor in a brutal cull that proves Kemi Badenoch has little respect for name or reputation.

She ditched Sir Mel because she knows he carries little gravitas with the public. In reality, she had no choice.

As nice as he is, Sir Mel was jettisoned because he failed to cut through with voters – even after two years in the job.

His sacking must have taken him by surprise too, given he had recently bolstered his backroom team with three new advisers. He has been replaced by Shadow Business Secretary Andrew Griffith.

Behind Ms Badenoch’s smile lies a ruthless streak, and she is starting to show it.

She knows the country is in peril and the Tories have one chance – perhaps one last chance – to prove that the mistakes, complacency, and controversy of the past are finally over.

Dame Priti Patel was also booted out of her job as Shadow Foreign Secretary – replaced by Tom Tugendhat – and has been shunted to the political tundra in the shape of an international role linking the Tories with centre‑right parties abroad.

Ms Badenoch’s ruthless reshuffle comes after Sir James Cleverly announced he was quitting the Tory front bench for a tilt at the London Mayoralty.

Shadow Health Secretary Stuart Andrew has also been shown the door.

On the eve of Parliament returning, it shows the Tories are back in business and up for the fight, puts Labour and Reform on the back foot, and, perhaps most importantly, proves the party is starting to get some vim and vigour back.

The Conservatives are refusing to pander to Reform and its voters as an increasingly marginalised Nigel Farage fights for his political life, and are watching as the wheels come off Labour’s time in office. Now, Andy Burnham’s honeymoon is over.

As if to prove this point, a senior Tory source said Ms Badenoch wanted a fresh approach to economic policy – the battleground of the next general election – saying: “Kemi is changing the way the Conservative Party approaches economic policy and creating a new economic leadership team for the next phase, focused on growth, higher living standards and fiscal credibility.”

Ms Badenoch, who is slowly turning the party around, thanked Sir Mel for his service – saying that alongside Dame Priti they served in “an exceptionally difficult point for the Conservative Party” after the 2024 election obliteration.

She referenced the usual platitudes – loyalty and dedication – and while that might be true, the simple fact remains that with an election on the horizon, she needs competent lieutenants who sell the Tories’ message in an engaging way, not more nondescript and unremarkable Average Joes .
