Andy Burnham plans a migration pact giving EU judges fresh power over Britain, undoing the Brexit vote that returned control to Westminster and British.
Must Britain refuse any pact restoring EU judges’ power over us?
Andy Burnham is planning to push for a deal that would hand power over Britain to EU judges as part of a new migration pact. The move would strike at the heart of the 2016 Brexit vote, when voters backed taking back control and the subsequent deal restored sovereignty to Westminster and British judges.
After weeks of soft-launching his bid to rejoin the EU, Mr Burnham is now eyeing an agreement with Strasbourg. The UK would gain access to databases of asylum seekers and criminals. In exchange, EU officials said Britain must accept oversight from the European Court of Justice and pay an extra fee, The Telegraph revealed.
Previously Mr Burnham blamed leaving the bloc for the rise in small boat crossings. This latest plan treats closer ties with Brussels as the answer while brushing aside the cost to British control. Alex Burghart, the Shadow Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, said Labour’s EU Reset treats a closer relationship with Brussels as a panacea while ignoring the real trade-offs for farmers, fishermen and taxpayers.
If access to EU databases means handing over taxpayers’ money and accepting ECJ oversight, Labour must explain the price. You cannot put a price on sovereignty, he told The Telegraph. GB News notes the clear choice: databases on one side, foreign judges and fresh bills on the other.
The 2016 vote and the deal that followed dragged power back from Europe. Any pact that returns it to Strasbourg judges reverses that hard-won ground. Britain already decides its own laws and borders. Signing up again for ECJ writ would undo the restoration of control that voters demanded and delivered.
Mr Burnham’s push shows the direction of travel. Sovereignty once returned should stay returned. A migration deal that sells it back for database access and an extra fee is no bargain at all.
