Good Morning Britain reporter Louisa Jameson expanded on reports Keir Starmer is set to welcome Angela Rayner back to the fold, while axing Rachel Reeves, as he is believed to be undertaking a cabinet reshuffle. Asked by host Ranvir Singh if this could save the currently embattled Prime Minister, Jameson explained what she knew.

Reporting from Westminster, she said: “[There are] some predicting that the Prime Minister could overhaul his top team as soon as next Saturday, the day after elections in Scotland, Wales and parts of England, which are expected to go very badly for Labour. And…there is a report this morning that that [this] could include bringing back Angela Rayner, the former Deputy Prime Minister, into the cabinet. She resigned over underpaying stamp duty, but that is thought to be close to being resolved, and the thinking would be that having her inside in the fold would make it harder for her to challenge the Prime Minister for the leadership,” she explained.

However, Jameson continued telling the host that this could be bad news for the Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves.

“There were also reports earlier this week that Rachel Reeves could go as part of a reshuffle,” she said, adding: “I should say none of this is confirmed.

“Downing Street never comments on rumours of a reshuffle, but it is another sign of how much these upcoming elections are being seen as a major point of danger for Sir Keir Starmer.

She then cut to a recording of the current UK ambassador to Washington, Christian Turner, talking to a group of six former officials in February and seemingly affirming the Prime Minister’s current woes and the importance of the elections.

He could be heard saying: “He, as a person, he’s a stubborn guy. He’s never lost a fight he’s in, and so I think Keir saying I’m quitting is quite a high bar.

“So, probably the moment I would look to is the May elections. If Labour does very badly in the May elections, I suspect the party will go over that threshold and remove him.”

Cutting back to Jameson, she explained: “The Foreign Office says that those were private and informal comments, not a reflection of the government’s position, but it is pretty extraordinary for lots of reasons, not least the fact that this is the second US Ambassador to make things awkward for Keir Starmer.

“He, last night, comfortably won a vote over whether he should be investigated on comments or statements he made about the appointment of Peter Mandelson. But 14 Labour MPs still rebelled, and the Conservatives are accusing those who voted with the government of being part of a cover-up.
