It comes as Britons already squeezed by cost-of-living pressures face higher costs at the pump due to the war in the Middle East.

A driver has been slammed as “selfish” after a video appeared to show her filling up plastic bags full of petrol amid panic about the rising cost of fuel in Britain. The clip showed a woman filling up what appear to be Sainsbury’s plastic bags with fuel at the pump, before carefully placing them in her boot of her car without tying them up at the top.

The moment was filmed by another motorist behind the woman’s vehicle, who accused her of being “selfish” adding: “We’re not going to run out of fuel, love.” The video has since been viewed over 10million times online, The Mirror reports. One person commented on the decision to leave the bags open, writing: “What does she think is going to happen when she goes round the corner?” Another said: “Sainsbury shopping bags though? At least do it with a jerry can,” while a third added: “The petrol will eat through these plastic bags.”

It comes as Britons already squeezed by cost-of-living pressures face higher costs at the pump due to the war in the Middle East.

US-Israeli strikes against the Islamic Republic began in on February 28 which triggered retaliations by Tehran against US bases in the region, and saw the regime effectively close the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route.

It triggered a global oil and natural gas shock, and has seen the price of petrol in Britain and other nations soar.

Figures from the RAC show the average price of a litre of diesel at forecourts in the UK yesterday (Monday, April 30) was 181.2p, up 27% from the 142.4p on the day the war began.

Meanwhile, average petrol prices have risen by 14% to 152.0p per litre over the same period.

Today, the Government published a list of some of the third-party fuel-price apps and websites using pump price data from the Government’s new Fuel Finder scheme which shows live prices across the UK.

All UK forecourts have been required to report price changes to the Fuel Finder database within half an hour of a change since February 2.

The Chancellor Rachel Reeves said her priority is “protecting family finances and standing up for drivers”, and that the price tracking scheme “puts power back into their hands”.

“By giving drivers the information they need to see where fuel is cheapest locally, they can avoid being overcharged and continue to fill up as normal,” she continued.

Earlier this month, Ms Reeves met with petrol retailers Downing Street saying they had a “shared obligation” to keep prices down for drivers.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is holding an urgent meeting of COBRA today to discuss soaring costs triggered by the conflict.
