Drivers are being urged to fill up their car with petrol or diesel before 3pm on Saturday as a fresh batch of snow forecasts and power cut warnings could bring travel disruption to certain parts of the UK.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow on Saturday, April 4, warning of potential blizzard conditions, travel disruption, power cuts and a danger to life. Scotland is expecting to see heavy snow, while England, Wales and Northern Ireland will be blasted with winds of up to 80mph.

The Met Office warned Scotland: “Snow and for a time blizzard conditions may disrupt travel for parts of northwest Scotland in association with Storm Dave.”

And the forecaster warned England: “Storm Dave brings a spell of very strong winds later Saturday into Easter Sunday morning which may cause some damage and travel disruption.”

The Met Office said in its warning advice: “Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary.

Motoring website Motors.co.uk urges people to fill up with petrol before cold weather, as you need to be fully prepared for travel disruption – there’s nothing worse than running out of fuel in the middle of snowstorm.

In its online advice, it says: “Always fill up with a full tank of fuel before heading on a long journey. Being stuck on the side of the motorway in zero-degree conditions isn’t ideal.”

British Gas, in its advice on preparing for heavy snow, urges drivers to keep their tank half full at least, and to check their car over before making any journey.

It says in its guidance on preparing for snow: “Have your brakes, heater, tyres and windscreen wipers checked to make sure they’re in good working order before winter.

“And if you can keep your fuel tank half full during snowy conditions, all the better.”

It also urges drivers to pack an emergency kit in their car. It says: “De-icer, scrapers, wiper fluid and anti-freeze will all come in handy if you need to drive during a cold snap.

“You might even want to keep some jump leads in the boot in case your car doesn’t start.

“And before going on any journeys, make sure you’ve got some food, water, a torch, your phone and charger, plus a blanket or two with you.”
