Ed Balls just made an unforgivable mistake on GMB – it’s time for him to go

OPINION: It’s time for ITV to show Ed Balls the door.

Good Morning Britain presenter Ed Balls has sparked uproar following an on-air exchange with an antisemitism campaigner in the aftermath of an arson attack on a Jewish volunteer ambulance service. This backlash followed a moment during the broadcast when Balls asked campaigner Dov Forman if Shadow Justice Secretary Nick Timothy’s criticism of the Trafalgar Square Iftar event last week is “causing problems” for the Jewish community.

Elaborating further, the former Labour politician highlighted comments regarding Muslim prayer at the event, questioning if such rhetoric threatened to fracture the Jewish community. The focus should have been solely centred around the rise and threat of antisemitism in the UK instead of criticism of public Muslim prayer events. Balls has completely missed the point, and his comments have diluted the seriousness of antisemitism.

Reform’s Robert Jenrick labelled Balls “absolutely clueless” after watching the interview back – and I have to agree with him.

Jenrick shared on social media: “The only people responsible for this sick crime are the perpetrators and our weak political leaders who have been too weak to confront extremism.”

What was Balls thinking? The exchange between him and Forman was deeply uncomfortable to watch, and an apology is owed to the campaigner, the Jewish people, and viewers at home.

His comments were extremely inappropriate, especially in the wake of an antisemitic attack, as, whether he intended to or not, he came across as if he was blaming Jewish people for the hate shared towards them. Forman handled the comments with grace, which is a testament to the young campaigner who had every right to hit back at Balls.

It’s not the first time Balls has been heavily criticised for his remarks, and it is quite frankly dangerous to have this sort of insensitive and misguided rhetoric shared with an audience of millions. And while maybe he deserves the benefit of the doubt, it doesn’t feel like this will be the last remark from him unless ITV sacks him.

Surely there are better journalists more suited to presenting Good Morning Britain than a failed Labour politician who is constantly accused of bias and buffoonery?

His poor journalism and inability to conduct quality interviews are frankly embarrassing. Please replace him.
