Labour lacks ‘backbone to deport’ 37,000 asylum seekers in taxpayer housing for a year

37,000 asylum seekers are stuck in taxpayer housing for over a year as Labour is accused of lacking the ‘backbone to deport’ – with total numbers over 107,000.

The number of asylum seekers spending more than a year in taxpayer-funded accommodation has reportedly ballooned by 40 per cent in a year and a half, with fresh figures laying bare the scale of a crisis that shows no sign of easing.

The reported data is said to reveal that over 37,000 people are now lodged in Home Office housing for extended periods — a rise of more than 10,000 since the same measure was last taken. Across all categories of asylum accommodation, the total has now broken through the 107,000 mark, The Express understands.

Hotels allegedly account for more than 30,000 of those places — a figure that has climbed steadily on Labour’s watch since the party took power in July 2024. Meanwhile, barely one in 17 of those who arrived by small boat in the same period has reportedly been sent back.

‘No backbone to deport’

According to the Sun, Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp said the figures exposed Labour’s failure to act.

“Labour are moving illegal immigrants from asylum hotels to long-term residential housing,” he told reporters.

“This embeds the problem deeper into communities.

“Dispersal accommodation allows illegal immigrants to disappear into your community.

“For every person moving out of shorter-term accommodation, three are being pushed into year-long stays.”

The rising numbers, Philp said, demonstrated that Labour lacked the “backbone to deport.”

German raids uncover Channel crossing hub

German police struck simultaneously at the supply chain behind Channel crossings, descending on a storage facility stacked with small boats earmarked for the journey to Britain, states the report.

Officers carried out 12 raids across North Rhine-Westphalia, detaining four Syrian nationals and walking away with at least 11 boats, a cache of weapons and gold bars says the Sun.
