Labour minister Peter Kyle was left stuttering in a car crash confrontation on GB News, as he clashed with anchor Mark White. Business and trade secretary Kyle appeared on the show via video link this morning (April 1), where he was grilled about illegal immigration and its effect on the UK economy during the cost of living crisis.

Presenter White fumed: “You would have more money to ensure people’s cost of living was reduced if we weren’t paying many millions of pounds once again to the French to guard the beaches, something that should be their responsibility in the first place.”

Kyle attempted to respond, saying: “Well the deal that was struck with the French has stopped 42,000 people making that crossing-“ but White quickly cut him off.

The host corrected him: “It really hasn’t, Mr Kyle. Can we just put this one to rest? It’s not stopped 40-odd thousand people, because the vast majority of people coming across the English Channel that are turned around are then included in that figure.

“It’s a minute proportion of that that are actually stopped on the beaches by the money we’re paying for the security.

“The rest are all people who have suffered engine failure halfway across, the boats are too overcrowded, or the wind and waves are too much for the boats so they get picked up by, then, the French patrols in French waters.”

Attempting to regain his composure, Kyle stuttered: “Well as I was saying, the investment we’ve done and the deal we’ve done has prevented people from crossing the Channel, but is there more to do? Yes there is.

“That’s why you see at this moment in time, Shabana Mahmood negotiating, er, engaged in discussions with the French to improve the deal. Is there more to be done? Of course there is, because there are still people crossing the Channel.

“You’re seeing, er, Shabana, er, doing fundamental reforms over the as- asylum system. She’s tackling down on any incentives there might be to come to Britain compared to other countries and she’s working with the French and other countries, because, er, these people who are, er, crossing the Channel are doing so from other countries.”
