A major incident was declared in a UK town after yet another fire erupted in Britain. Ten fire engines and three aerial platforms were dispatched to Selbourne Road in Luton, where firefighters have been working since 6am on Saturday to quash an inferno that erupted at a bathroom showroom.

Nearby residents evacuated their homes, as locals have been urged to keep their windows and doors shut due to plumes of smoke billowing from the scene. In an update early this afternoon, Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said crews had surrounded the fire and were using water jets to tackle it. The major incident was stood down just before 1pm, but smoke continued to billow into the sky and road closures and the evacuation remained enforced. The cause of the fire was not immediately clear, but an investigation will be carried out once the fire is fully extinguished, the fire service said.

Major incident stood down

In an update Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service just before 1pm, crews said they had stood down the “major incident”.

The update read:

“Thanks to the incredible efforts of fire crews on site in tackling the blaze, we have stood down the major incident declared earlier and will begin scaling down the fire service presence on scene

There is still smoke and we expect that will continue to be the case for a number of hours – if nearby residents are affected, please close windows and doors.

Road closures and evacuations are still in place but are being reviewed regularly by emergency services on scene.

A full fire investigation will take place once the fire is fully extinguished and it is safe to do so.”
