A depraved thug who held his girlfriend’s head under sewage water in a terrifying attack has been jailed. Liam Dawson, 34, from Burton-on-Trent, was sentenced at Stafford Crown Court after he pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm with intent.

Dawson and the woman were found by officers next to a damaged black Audi S3 in Kitling Greaves Lane in May last year after police responded to reports of screaming. The woman was bruised and bleeding from her head as she told officers Dawson had intentionally crashed the car before subjecting her to an attack which lasted for hours.

The monster crashed the Audi into metal railings then dragged the woman out of the car by her hair.

He started punching and kicking her over and over in the head, yanking off her jewellery then throwing it along with her phone into a brook nearby.

Dawson held her head and body underwater before dragging her back to the car where he slammed a door on her head.

When she woke up after passing out from the ordeal Dawson was defecating on her face.

He then continued to lash out, punching the woman in the head and telling her he would kill her.

People living nearby called the police after hearing the woman’s screams. Dawson was arrested and the woman taken to safety, according to Staffordshire Police.

Det Cons Lauren Ashby from the force said: “I want to pay tribute to the tremendous strength and dignity of the victim throughout the investigation and court case, something which Dawson tried his upmost to strip her of.

“Bravely reading out her victim personal statement for the court, detailing the abuse she endured and how she believed she was going to die, is testament to her courage.”

Ms Ashby also thanked the members of the public who reported the attack, adding: “Realistically, if it wasn’t for their actions, it could have been a completely different outcome.”

Dawson was sentenced to 19 years and three months at Stafford Crown Court on March 27. He had denied the charge, but changed his plea before the trial.

Ms Ashby said: “We will not tolerate violence against women and girl and we hope this sentencing gives more victims of domestic abuse the confidence to come forward. You will be listened to and supported as we seek justice for you.”

If you are a victim of violence, call the police on 101. In an emergency, always call 999.
