A woman has reportedly been stabbed to death at a Lidl checkout in Germany, despite the efforts of two construction workers who hit the knifeman with bottles. Roughly 20 shoppers were in the supermarket in Ratzeberg, Northern Germany, when the shocking attack took place at around 3.45pm, according to German news outlet Bild.

The two men who intervened wrestled the attacker to the ground and ultimately succeeded in subduing him. “A suspect has been seriously injured,” Lübeck police confirmed.

One eyewitness told German news outlet Kieler Nachrichten that he believed the perpetrator had no prior connection to the woman he allegedly killed.

The local homicide squad and the public prosecutor’s office have launched a murder investigation.

The Lidl store remains cordoned off, with police confirming there is no ongoing threat to the public, adding that they had received numerous emergency calls.
