The real reason for Meghan and Harry’s UK move – but three royals stand in their way_t

A move back to the UK looks like the safe option for Meghan and Harry but three powerful royals can make safe feel like an exile.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are returning to Blighty but if they think every single royal will welcome them with a fanfare, the pair are as deluded as they may be desperate. I’ve written before about the commercial reality US observers fear the Sussexes have been facing in the ‘States, with some Hollywood executives and TV viewers simply tiring of them.

In a country with a cost of living crisis and national debt doubling in a decade, having a millionaire royal couple moaning about their life of privilege and daddy issues must seriously stick in the craw of most bored Americans. It’s also been discussed how Meghan has burned through a stream of influential media pals, such as with a recent spat with US lifestyle guru Martha Stewart, 85.

Meghan has also fallen out with Vogue fashion magazine supremo Dame Anna Wintour, after the Duchess of Sussex sided with then Vogue UK editor Edward Enninful. Wintour’s rival lost his power play and stepped down in 2024.

In July, a UK return looked even more on the cards when an ally of Prince Harry admitted there is “a feeling that the American dream might not be all that it was cracked up to be”, adding: “He has started to feel a bit unwelcome in America.”

Add that to a recent High Court battle Harry has lost, that has left him facing a legal bill that could potentially reach millions of pounds, and returning to the safety of Britain was a no-brainer.

But while a few Cotswolds celebrities might be pleased to see the pair back on the scene, some high-ranking members of the Royal Family will definitely not.

Harry, Meghan, Princess Catherine and Prince William were once the ‘Fab Four’ before Megxit, offering an exciting future for the Royal Family.

But any private disagreements became public ones when Harry cashed-in on their rows with his bitter 2023 memoir Spare.

In one passage, he claimed that William assaulted him during an argument over his wife, Meghan, in 2019.

Harry wrote: “It all happened so fast. So very fast. He grabbed me by the collar, ripping my necklace, and he knocked me to the floor.”

Touting Spare around TV, Harry said he hoped he and William could “find peace”, completely blind to the upset he was causing while gleefully raking in over £20 million in book sales thanks to his revelations.

Catherine too will not be eagerly baking the Sussexes any ‘welcome home’ cake after Harry accused her of upsetting Meghan before their wedding.

Harry also accused William and Catherine of being complicit in his infamous and outrageous decision to wear a Nazi outfit at a fancy dress party.

Meanwhile Queen Camilla is the third royal who will not be dusting off the bunting in the coming days, or booking a room at a Cotswolds Premier Inn so she can pop round and see the Sussexes pull onto their new driveway.

In Spare Harry carefully used the cruel phrase ‘wicked stepmother’ when discussing Camilla, knowing that the label would stick.

He also accused Camilla of sacrificing him on her PR altar, suggesting her effort to rehabilitate her image came at his expense – by briefing the media against him.

He cited one instance when Camilla allegedly leaked one of her early conversations with William. A newspaper later revealed it was in fact Camilla’s former assistant who leaked it and she was then let go.

Then appearing on CBS’s 60 Minutes in January 2023 Harry said of Camilla: “She was the villain.”

So Harry and Meghan are coming back to Britain, but quite a few royals will be hoping the housewarming invite simply gets ‘lost’ in the post.
