Wetherspoon has issued a statement after Reform UK supporters were allegedly refused service at one of its pubs. The incident is believed to have occurred at The Picture Palace in Braintree, Essex.
A video of a young member of staff recorded by one of the people who claimed to have been rejected was posted on social media. A man can be heard asking the person behind the bar: “We can’t have a drink, then, no?” The member of staff then responded: “I’m deciding that.”
A spokesperson for the pub chain did not deny that the group was refused service, claiming that “enthusiastic” supporters of Nigel Farage’s party were filming outside the pub, and parked a vehicle in its loading area. They added that customers are asked to comply with its licensing rules.
“Wetherspoon welcomes supporters of all political parties,” the spokesperson said. “In fact, the leaders of Reform have regularly used our pubs in Clacton and Skegness.
“Politics can obviously raise strong emotions, and we have asked all parties to use our pubs on a social basis, rather than a political one, to maintain good order and comply with licensing obligations.”
“In this case, enthusiastic Reform supporters were filming outside the pub and parked their bus in the pub’s loading bay.
“As indicated, Reform supporters and other political supporters are welcome, but we do ask that they help us to comply with our licensing obligations.”
