Sky News was interrupted for a breaking news announcement on Wednesday morning as the channel delivered a major blow to Sir Keir Starmer and his Labour party. The news channel revealed that new polls have suggested that the political party will have their worst results in London for 50 years.

Presenter Sam Coates shared that a Sky and YouGov polling prediction suggests that the Greens are set to be the largest party on four councils – Hackney, Lambeth, Lewisham and Waltham Forest. He shared that Starmer’s party were set to be hit by the biggest blow, as he compared the results to 2022 and said: “Labour, the largest party, in 15 of the councils are down by six. The Tories are down by one and Lib Dems are up by four.” As the reporter spoke, the words “Labour lose grip?” appeared on the screen next to the charts. Looking at the poll results in a historical perspective, Coates added: “You can see 50 years ago that Labour and the Tories were pretty much neck and neck.” But now, Labour have “dropped down a lot”. He explained: “It’s the Greens having a big jump up.”

The polls also showed that Reform UK are expected to pick up significant levels of previous Conservative support in the outer boroughs and drive into Labour heartlands in Barking and Dagenham, and Bromley.

Those watching had mixed responses to the polls. Taking to X/Twitter, one person wrote: “Totally deserved despite the media’s best efforts to cover for their relentless corruption, financial mismanagement and gaslighting.”

One more echoed: “This is unacceptable. They need wiping out.” While one more said: “Where do we go for a balanced view of what is going on in this country and the wider world? The majority of the media here are singing one note continually.”

Meanwhile, someone else wrote: “The political map in London is looking increasingly fragmented, and this shift toward the Greens and Reform suggests the ‘big two’ are struggling to maintain their traditional grip on the capital.

“If these projections hold, we’re seeing a significant realignment where voters aren’t just looking for an alternative—they’re actively moving toward more ideological poles.

“It’ll be fascinating to see if this is a temporary protest or a permanent shift in London’s political DNA.”
